Roberta MacDonald - Adult Adoptee

nccar@mindspring.com

An adult adoptee from New Jersey and was reunited with my birthmother, sister and a niece in 1996. It became very clear to me, I could walk into the Bureau of Vital Statistics in New Jersey with my birthmother on my arm, and they still would not give me a copy of that which should rightfully be mine.  A copy of my original birth certificate.  I became active on the internet, searching out information regarding adoption laws, and finally coming to the conclusion I could do little to change the adoption law in New Jersey, so I turned to putting my efforts into changing the existing antiquated law in North Carolina.  And so in August 2000, the North Carolina Coalition for Adoption Reform became a 501(c4) non-profit organization.  My Story was heard on the Dick Gordon Show. You can listen to it here.

Secretary

David Vaughan - Adult Adoptee

David.vaughan@suddenlink.net

I am an adult adoptee raised in North Carolina.  I and my sister have always known we were adopted because our mother chose to be open from the start.  I could not have asked for a better family and have never felt an urge to search for my birth parents.  Recently I was diagnosed with benign essential tremor (I get the shakes) and my doctor inquired about family medical history since this is often hereditary.  Knowing I was unable to answer immediately, I then attempted to get some information on my biological parents and at this point I found out how hard this is for adoptees.  My searching for information led me to NCCAR and I decided to join.  I believe if one person has access, then ALL should have access.

Treasurer

Susan Daniels - Birthmother

 susan1956@earthlink.net

Susan is a birthmother who relinquished her son in 1978. Susan believed then, that by the time her son was an adult, there would be at least a mutual  consent registry in North Carolina. Susan read an article in the paper in 2000 about NCCAR and contacted Roberta. Since the laws had not yet changed, she decided to do her part to help change them. Susan has "found" her son, and hopes to meet him one day soon.

PR and Media Representative

Joanna Freitag - Adult Adoptee

joannafreitag@yahoo.com

Joanna Freitag is an adult adoptee that believes in the right for the adult adoptee to access their original birth certificate once they become an adult.  She believes it is important for an adoptee to also have continuous access to updated medical information because of the number of disorders and diseases which are genetically linked.  This is not only important for an adoptee, but equally as important for his or her own children and the generations to come.

Joanna believes that the current adoption laws (with all of the lies and secrecy) allow for adoption related businesses (some search firms and attorneys) to capitalize on what the non-adopted population obtains by birthright and for free.   This is why Joanna serves as a NC Search Angel.
